Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Celtic Pride Bjj

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a combat sport that focuses on grappling and especially ground fighting. Like Judo, it promotes the principle that smaller, weaker person can successfully defend themselves against a bigger, stronger assailant using leverage and proper technique.

Muay Thai

Celtic Pride Muay Thai

Muay Thai is referred to as "The Art of Eight Limbs", as the practitioner uses their hands, shins, elbows, and knees extensively in both training and competition, giving eight points of contact rather than the traditional two (hands only) offered by traditional western boxing. This makes Thai Boxing one of the most devastating and offensive striking arts in the world.

The history of Thai Boxing is connected with the migrations of the Thai tribe (meaning "free") in the 12th and 13th centuries from Juang-XI, Sichuan and Hubei provinces in the south of China, into the present territory of Thailand.

Mixed Martial Arts

Celtic Pride MMA

During the first UFC tournaments it became apparent that there was no single martial art that covered all aspects of fighting. Boxers suddenly found themselves helpless being pinned to the floor and tied up in submissions, and wrestlers found themselves being knocked out before they had a chance to slam their opponent.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

The advantages of superior reach and powerful strikes are somewhat negated when grappling on the ground, instead the practitioner will use posture control, joint locks and chokeholds to defeat their opponent. BJJ can be trained for self defence, sport grappling tournaments and mixed martial arts (MMA) competition. Sparring and live drilling play a major role in training, and a premium is placed on performance, especially in competition.

All students at Celtic Pride will be given the opportunity, and encouraged, to compete with the full support of their training partners and instructors.

Achieving a dominant position on the ground is one of the hallmarks of the BJJ style, and includes effective use of the guard position to defend oneself from bottom, and passing the guard to dominate from top position with side control, mount, and back mount positions.

Once a submission is applied, the opponent will have the opportunity to ‘tap out’ or verbally submit, signalling the end of the match when in training or competition.

Sport Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu's focus on submissions without the use of strikes while training allows practitioners to practice at full speed, full power and full effort, resembling the effort used in a real competition. This type of training will quickly tire an individual not familiar with grappling, so physical conditioning is also an important part of training at many clubs.

Muay Thai

Migrations were particularly intensive in the thirteenth century under the pressures of Mongol hordes from the north. Therefore some sources assume that Thai Boxing has its origin in Chinese Boxing (Kung Fu), but that it has changed considerably. Other sources indicate that it originated during the period of incessant fights between the Thai Kingdom and their neighbouring Burma, Khmer and Cham (Vietnam) states.

Like most competitive full contact fighting sports, Muay Thai has a heavy focus on body conditioning. Muay Thai is specifically designed to promote the level of fitness and toughness required for ring competition. Training regimens include many staples of combat sport conditioning such as running, shadowboxing, rope jumping, body weight resistance exercises, medicine ball exercises, abdominal exercises, and in some cases weight training. Training that is specific to a Muay Thai fighter includes training with coaches on Thai pads, focus mitts, heavy bag, and sparring.

Muay Thai in Mixed Martial Arts

Muay Thai has enjoyed a boost in popularity worldwide as it has been very effective in mixed martial arts training and competition. MMA artists such as Mauricio Rua, Wanderlei Silva, and Anderson Silva have combined many striking elements of Muay Thai with their grappling, wrestling and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu skills that have been highly effective in their fights. Muay Thai is becoming an increasingly important part of many successful MMA fighters' arsenal.

Kru Lee Stingemore

Kru Lee Stingemore has been training in Muay Thai since 1999 and has earned all grades up to 10th Kahn and Senior Instructor under the Phraya Pichai Muay Thai Camps Chief Instructor Ajarn Bob Spour. Lee also trained in Ilempo and kickboxing for 9 years with Master Gary Gassor (7th Degree Black Belt).

Mixed Martial Arts

This led to fighters beginning to ‘cross train’ different styles, so the Boxers trained Judo and BJJ, the grapplers trained striking arts, leading to the modern MMA fighter who is confident and competent in several different styles.

Very few fighters are equally skilled in several different arts, and almost everyone will prefer grappling over striking or vice versa. For example, Chuck Liddell uses ‘sprawl and brawl’ tactics, keeping the fight standing at all costs with the intent of knocking out his opponent, whereas Damien Maia will do the exact opposite and takedown his opponent at the first opportunity and force a submission.

Today in modern MMA, striking, clinch work and submission fighting are both practised and utilised extensively in almost all matches.

MMA isn’t just about the UFC, there is a vibrant Amateur MMA scene in the UK and many events in South Wales were student can test their skills at the lower levels before deciding if they want to take their MMA career further. Events such as the Grapple & Strike attract competitors from all over the UK and other promotions regularly host events in places such as Swansea, Merthyr and Cardiff.
